Attitude to studying foreign languages changed dramatically in recent few decades. It was absolutely unnecessary for the generation of our parents and grandparents, who lived “behind the iron curtain” of USSR, but nowadays the interest towards the language studies is reviving. I think that the main reason for this is need for international and intercultural communication. Knowledge of at least one foreign languages t is essential if you want to find a good job. Communication skills in English, German, French, or Spanish would be quite useful, if you decide to spend your vacation abroad. And – the last, but not the least! – you can read your favorite books without translation.
On the other hand, studying foreign languages demands everyday hard work. If you want to keep up with your literacy and language fluency, you should speak the foreign language and read the foreign language, and write letters in it every day. If you are too lazy to do so, it will be no use to bother starting your studies.
And one more thing one should realize before the start: a foreigner will never be a native speaker! If you starts from scratch in your twenties, or even in your teens, English would never be as comfortable for you to read or speak or think, as it is with Russian. Probably, it worth thinking of rising your children bilingual or trilingual. But even in this case you should study foreign languages anyway – in order to communicate with those hypothetic polyglot children of yours!
